![]() Forstner bits enter the wood very well, and just where you want them to, thanks to the center spur. Drills are slacker instruments that go where they want. When using twist bits, you have to be concerned about the drill moving away from your target. These bits get a great start in the wood. The forstner bit is soft on the wood and only removes material when it is absolutely necessary. This leaves rough spots, which may necessitate more repair. The cutting action of drilling can extract fibers from the wood. With a Forstner bit, there is less tear-out. Drilling neat holes through a thick piece of wood are possible with them. When it comes to getting smoothness, the difference between a twist bit and a forstner bit is tremendous. More smoothness and precisionįorstner bits provide flat bottom holes that are clean and precise. Here they are, and as a woodworker, they can all give you greater control and alternatives. What Are the Benefits of Forstner Bits?įorstner bits have a number of advantages over other bit types. This will allow you to maintain the pieces in good condition for a long time while also keeping them organized. However, you’ll probably want to choose a set of pieces that comes with a handy storage container. When it comes to Forstner bits, there isn’t much to talk about in terms of accessories, unlike with power tools. Consider your usage and choose the product accordingly. Impact drivers with quick-release hex chucks are compatible with hex shanks. Types of shanksĭrill presses and ordinary hand drills, both have adjustable chucks that are appropriate for round shanks. You won’t end up in a position where you have a Forstner bit but it’s useless because it’s the wrong size. If you’re looking for a set to keep in your toolbox, we suggest getting one with at least five – preferably ten – different sizes bits. It will enable you to save money while also allowing you to obtain a higher-quality item. If you have a specific application in mind, get the bit size that you require. Otherwise, a metric-sized set may be preferable. If you’re based in the United States and generally work with local materials, choose inch-sized bits. Imperial and metric sets are the two alternatives here the former will feature inch-sized bits, while the latter will have millimeter- and centimeter-sized bits. Is that what you want? Axminster only have a few specific imperial cutters in their standard range, and most sets I have seen here are metric. What To Look For in the Best Forstner Bits Units of measurementĪn important factor to consider is the units in which your Forstner bits will be measured. The Record Power set seems to be imperial, by the way. I couldn't possibly justify buying them at normal prices, but they are sooo good. I bought a Colt set of wood drills when Axminster sold off their stock (when they dropped the brand), and they were a brilliant deal. That all said, if you can get that Festool set for 100 quid, I'd go for it. I bought a diamond disc for it years ago, and that is ideal. The key thing seems to be getting the rim to cut/score really well, like a lip and spur bit I guess, and I can do that with my Proxxon mini drill. I resharpen the larger ones in the cheap set (20mm upwards) with some success, to the extent that I check and fettle them before use if they need it. The smaller one (12mm) is a different pattern to the larger ones, which is very sensible, as in my cheap set they are all the same, just scaled down, and the smaller ones clog terribly. ![]() I am slowly replacing the originals in a cheap set, on the basis that the ones I wear out are the ones I need. They are roughly 10-20 quid each, depending on size. I've just bought some standard Axminster ones, having tried them at 22mm in Buffalo board (melamine-faced and impregnated, so very tough on cutters of all sorts).
